Figures

Poetry can be expressed in many different forms. One poet that utilizes the use of figurative expression is Elizabeth Bishop. In many of her poems the images that were being portrayed conveyed a meaning or attitude of the poem. One poem that I found really interesting was Sestina. Verse37 states “Time to plant tears, says the almanac.” The attitude or feeling that sadness or sorry in tears can grow and spread. The poem is filled with sorry, describing tears to the rain, and in every image a tear can be seen. Like the abundance of trees, there is an abundance of sadness that cannot be hidden. Another poem filled with figurative expression is Questions of travel. In this poem Bishop describes many scenes such as driving along the road with trees outside or stopping to fill gas and hearing a conversation. This is hard to do when life is moving at such a fast pace. Or another part she says “we rush to see the sun the other way around.” In this part she is describing the attitude of the people as always on the move to discover more they can never stop to just admire the beauty of nature such as the “one more folded sunset,” which there is still enough time to do because Bishop describes it as being “still quite warm”

In the Intro to the Cold War, McMahon mentions in 1947 that the United States treated the Japanese as the “Asian analogue to the (West) Germany.” He also mentions that at first the goal of the United States in Japan was to reform the state and demilitarize the country but then shifted to helping its “rapid growth.” This is just one of the times that American policy was to accomplish what was the best for them under any objectives whether be right or wrong. Another example was the Truman Doctrine protecting the “sovereign nations.” Yet many times in history has shown that the United States do not follow this policy and try to impose their own rule on the sovereign people of another state. President Truman clearly states that the containment as a “negative, futile and immoral policy” This is the consensus feelings that Americans feel that the must accomplish whatever task at any opportunity using the CIA.

Figurative language is on the contrast to history because nothing is stated explicitly in figurative language. In history everything is stated explicitly and nothing has to be implied. A certain image describes a feeling or an attitude. If an image is described in history that is exactly what it is. A feeling of sadness is portrayed for example by many people being killed in the war.

Myths

I think from Monday’s discussions and from what I read in the alligator is all tying together in my head. Before I would always see things very one dimensional when it comes to readings. In the alligator Professor Denslow was commenting on the economy and what type of degree would be prosperous. He then goes on to say that degrees that enhance “critical thinking” are important rather than easy simple degrees. That is what was discussed on the first day of class that is the main theme behind this class. I guess critical thinking was always very hard for me to do. Then on Monday it all made sense with reading the Cold War. Looking at the Truman Doctrine and seeing what the myth/ general consensus was. America is a strong believer is sovereignty but would suppress sovereignty in other states. This is still happening today and a lot of Americans feel this is the correct thing to do. For example with the Middle East crises America is going into Iraq and trying to impose a governmental system that they are not accustomed to. One poem that really seemed interesting was Bishop’s Questions of Travel. In one line she states “…we are determined to rush to see the sun the other way around?” This is clearly scientific thought to analyze every situation, and not just look at an object from one side but multiple degrees. Another I believe that has deep myth is her verse “we dream our dreams and have them, too?” When I read this phrase what came to mind was that the consensus of Americans is generally very materialistic, also that America epidemic is obesity. These all have to do with uncontrollable desire to have everything one “wants.”
